Late Summer Greetings to You!
Our expectations are often wrong. If Jesus came today, would you expect him to be having dinner at your house? Me neither. I would expect him at a dinner party hosted by Billy Graham or the Pope, not with lowly, ordinary people—people who have “issues” and problems and are a little bit messy. But that’s where Jesus wanted to be.
Jesus came to heal us; this was one of his main purposes for being here. Yes, the primary reason was to be the perfect sacrifice to pay the price for all sins, surrendering his life and defeating death through his resurrection. But while he was accomplishing his chief goal, he was doing many other things too, like healing people.
When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” Matthew 9:11-12 NIV
We’re all sick, in some manner, and need the Great Physician. It’s just that some of us are aware of our needs and others aren’t. No one is beyond needing the heart transplant that only Jesus can offer. Jesus wants us to be in our honest place, to admit our need, that we’re a little messy and need his healing.
Jesus refers to himself as a doctor. It’s a rare thing to find a doctor that makes house calls. Invite him in; your home is exactly where he wants to be.
Like a skilled surgeon, the Lord pulls out the arrows that have deeply wounded us and then brings total healing—so much so, you can’t even detect where the arrows previously struck. He makes our heart strong and whole again. Next time an arrow pierces your heart, let the Lord take up your case. (Healing Words, Day 246)
